> tincan.ie explains the Tin Can API in plain English for e-learning course authors: what it is, how it differs from SCORM, and how to publish a Tin Can course from Storyline, Rise, Captivate and iSpring. Written by Learn Skills, makers of Learn Skills LRS, a hosted Learning Record Store in Ireland.

## Key facts

- Tin Can and xAPI (the Experience API) are the same standard. Tin Can was the project name while Rustici Software developed it for the US Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL); version 1.0 was published in 2013 as the Experience API. Most courses use version 1.0.3; a later version is IEEE 9274.1.1-2023.
- A course sends statements, which read like sentences: actor (who), verb (what they did), object (what they did it to), for example "Ann Murphy passed Fire Safety Basics with 85%".
- Statements are stored in a Learning Record Store (LRS), which is to Tin Can what an LMS is to SCORM.
- Unlike SCORM, a Tin Can course doesn't need an LMS: it can be launched from a link, a website or an app.
- A published Tin Can zip doesn't record anything on its own: it must be launched with the LRS address and the learner's details.
